Today is Veterans Day, so please remember all the sacrifices that our soldiers and military families make everyday. And as much as I find robots to be creepy, I have to give a shout out to all the bots that help keep those soldiers safe by detecting and disarming bombs. Some robots, it turns out, are quite useful to have around.
These look like something out of cheap science fiction movie but in fact the ROBART series represents two decades of research and development by the US Navy to build a sentient robot army. Skynet will look back fondly on these pictures one day.
Okay, so this is actually kinda effin’ impressive — and more than a little terrifying. The video is pretty long but jump ahead to the 3.20 mark and you’ll see. Yes, that robotic machine just absorbed a huge explosion and didn’t bat an eye. And yes that is the soundtrack from Terminator 2 playing in the background. Sweet mother we are all doomed.

Here’s a robotic machine you’d not like to meet in a dark alley. Or a well-lit one, for that matter. This is a prototype exoskeleton being developed by Raytheon-Sarcos for a variety of industrial and military uses. To really get a sense of how scary this thing looks, check out this news report, starting at the 0:15 mark:
In a way, though, this contraption does remind me a bit of the power lifter from the film Aliens. So if this thing can help us fight off acid-bleeding killer aliens then I guess I’m all for it.
